The new altima is in some way a class above its competitors. For instance, the 2013 altima has the same wheelbase as the previous-generation model, but both its front and rear track are 1. 4 in. Wider, and its fenders are deeper. This gives it a muscular, sporting stance that sets it apart from some of the others. the car features a blacked-out grille with a chrome surround, very a la mode, and a zoomie, striking headlight cluster. A short hood blends with a steeply canted windshield in what was once called cab forward styling. A pronounced character line runs high along the side of the cab towards the rear, but the nissan stylists have avoided using multiple character lines and cluttering altima's look, as some others do. The profile is clean and elegant. The trunk lid reveals a conveniently low lift-over height of only 26. 9 inches, and there are dual chrome tailpipes, de rigeur these days, no matter what the engine. side mirrors with redundant turn-signal lights are a nice safety provision. overall, the altima looks stylish, aggressive and sporting. In the upper level of trim packages, it looks more expensive than it is. The sl trim is positively elegant and richly equipped. The white-on-black gauges were handsome, immediately legible, and were surrounded by excellent soft-touch dashboard padding. The tachometer displayed a 6600-rpm redline for the 2. 5. We missed the paddle shifters, available only on the 3. 5 models. But in the 2. 5, intelligent circuitry and the cvt continuously variable transmission regulate engine speed automatically. The power driver's seat had 6-way adjustability, and a nice leather-wrapped steering wheel presented the usual audio and cruise controls, plus controls for the navigation system. A one-touch open/close moonroof with a manual sunscreen was included as part of the sv convenience package. one point particularly worth mentioning about the altima is its quietness. Considerable effort was made to rigidify the body structure and soundproof its panels. This contributes strongly to the car's class above impression, quietness being one sure hallmark of luxury cars. But the materials that silence cars also add weight. Nissan was nonetheless able to reduce the 2013 altima's weight from that of the previous model by 79 pounds, no mean achievement. nissan's zero-gravity seats are designed to provide uniform support from pelvis to chest. The benefits of these seats are said to be felt on long motor trips. They seemed comfortable enough to us, but we didn't take a long enough trip to notice anything exciting. more exciting is the new altima's electronic connectivity packages. All models are furnished with bluetooth hands-free phone systems and streaming audio. Also available is hands-free messaging assistant, pandora integration, usb connection for ipod interface and satellite radio. The advantages of managing text messaging hands free are so enormous, we can't begin to say enough about them. Invaluable. and there's more. And the higher trim models are positively lavish. driving impressionthe 3. 5-liter v6 altima, with its 270 horsepower and sporty paddle shifters, can accelerate from zero to 60 mph, nissan says, in 6. 2 seconds. Nissan says the altima 2. 5 can perform 0-60 in just 7. 14 seconds. Autoweek reported this feat took 8. 0 seconds, and we think that's closer to reality. 2008 dodge ram 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Never before have trucks been more capable for hauling and towing nor more competent at coddling passengers. There is no mistaking a ford f-150 for a nissan titan or a toyota tundra, nor even confusing a chevy silverado with a gmc sierra. Any one of them would be a good choice from a consumer's point of view. but it was the ram that started the high-style-truck trend back in 1994 when dodge took a risk with a bold, retro big-rig design. That truck transformed ram from a bit player with staid styling to a big-stage event. The dodge ram has run with the big boys ever since, sometimes leading, sometimes trailing, but always solidly on the bill. Whether the '08 ram is merely as good as the trucks listed above, or somewhat better, is more a matter of personal preference than anything else. the dodge ram 1500 light-duty pickups are smooth and refined. Their cabs are comfortable and convenient, among the roomiest in their respective classes. The quad cab is handy for hauling friends and family but even the regular cab is roomy. arguably, the ram is the best-looking truck on the market. Its styling is bold and handsome, even more so in its latest incarnation. ram was extensively re-engineered for 2006, with a new hydroformed frame that's boxed its full length; plus new suspension and body mounts that improved ride, handling, and quietness. That same year, ram was modestly restyled inside and out. the 2008 model year brings new life to the 4. 7-liter v8, with horsepower up 31 percent to 310 hp and torque up 10 percent to 330 pound-feet. Other updates to the 2008 dodge ram lineup include simpler maintenance intervals, trailer sway control added to the optional stability system, available tire pressure monitors, new steering hardware for 4wds, dark maple woodgrain trim on laramie, and two new colors right out of the muscle car age: sunburst orange and detonator yellow. ram's optional hemi engine delivers power and efficiency. The switchover is seamless, and fuel economy is improved by as much as 20 percent, says dodge. Step on the gas, however, and the cylinders reawaken, ready to deliver the 345 peak ponies that make the hemi-powered ram one of the most exciting light-duty pickups on the market. Several engines are offered: a 3. 7-liter overhead-cam v6, 4. 7-liter v8, and the 5. 7-liter hemi v8. Several trim levels are offered: st is the base model with vinyl upholstery and wind-up windows. St comes standard with air conditioning, tilt steering, variable intermittent wipers, 40/20/40 vinyl seat, am/fm/cd stereo, rear-wheel abs, 17-inch steel wheels and a full-size spare tire, and a v8 and electric-shift transfer case on 4wd. Options parallel those on the st, although the stx is the trim level for the trx4 off-road package. slt comes standard with the 4. 7-liter flex-fuel v8, six-disc cd changer, carpeting, power windows/door locks/heated mirrors, overhead console with mini-trip computer and compass, cruise control, and 17-inch painted aluminum wheels. Options include a navigation system, sirius satellite radio, uconnect bluetooth hands-free wireless communication, 5. 7 v8, on-demand 4wd, bucket seats, six-way power driver seat and 20-inch aluminum wheels. A power sunroof and a rear-seat dvd entertainment system are available for slt quad cabs. the sport group for the slt comes with the hemi engine and five-speed automatic transmission, unique cloth-faced bucket seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, body-color grille and bumper fascia, fog lamps, and 20-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels. Options are the same as for the slt. laramie is the luxury trim level, offered only as quad cab automatic. Leather seats are standard, with a heated, split 40/20/40 bench up front and power adjustment for the driver. Options include navigation, power sunroof, adjustable pedals, and electronic upgrades. safety features include optional side-curtain airbags designed to provide head protection in a side impact or rollover. We recommend getting them; head injuries are the leading cause of death in side impacts. An electronic stability program (esp) is optional. walkaroundthe 2008 dodge ram presents a bold, distinctive appearance with its big horse-collar grille and freightliner fenders. The concept dates back a dozen years, but it received a major redesign for 2002 and a makeover for 2006. The headlamps cut back deeper into the fenders, and a flattened front bumper on sport and laramie emphasizes ram's big-rig image. A slot in the front bumper aids engine cooling and air conditioner performance. ram's trademark front grille remains one of the most instantly recognizable front ends on the road. A thick band of chrome surrounds the grille on st, slt and laramie; the band is body color on sport models. The broad, sloping hood has a pronounced crown that falls over the sides to the prominent front fenders, helpful for clearance, less so for seeing edges in tight quarters. a fast, raked-back windshield enhances aerodynamics and water management, while gracefully blending modern sleekness with ram's retro lower body. The leading edge of the front door overlaps the a-pillar, creating a smooth transition from the front of the cab to the side. Everything is smooth and integrated. The big side mirrors, great for visibility, are mounted on platforms to minimize wind noise, and a channel has been specially designed to keep water off of the mirrors. That seems high when trying to heave heavy gear aboard. All beds are fitted with boat cleats designed to handle 1,000 pounds each. ordering the long bed adds 20 inches to the wheelbase of a dodge ram. And a quad cab wheelbase is 20 inches longer than a regular cab. So a quad cab long bed has 40 more inches of wheelbase than a regular cab short bed. Long-bed rams also get a bigger fuel tank, 35 gallons in place of the standard 26 gallons; some of the latter offer a 34-gallon option. interiorthe dodge ram is among the roomiest of the full-size pickups, and its cab is a pleasant place to be. It sacrifices a few inches of bed space for interior space. regular cab and quad cab versions offer identical roominess in the front seats. Standard front seating in the ram is a bench split 40/20/40. The narrow center section features a large fold-down armrest with a compartment big enough to hold a laptop. we've found both the cloth and the leather seats comfortable. The driving position is good, with good visibility in all directions, though the aerodynamic front end makes it impossible to see the front corners. Big mirrors on the ram make it easy to see what's behind. we found the bucket seats in the sport version comfortable and supportive and the sporty fabric looks durable. The latest fabrics, first introduced with the 2007 models, are designed to be more stain and odor-resistant than before, while also reducing static cling. Laramie models get silver trim adorning the door panels and instrument bezels. Laramie comes with distinctive leather trim, with higher-contrast color seat inserts. the ram interior shows attention to details that add utility and convenience. The big fold-down center armrest/console comes with adjustable dividers and a power outlet. A hook on the passenger-side floor well is provided for securing a plastic grocery bag or anything else with suitable handles. premium amenities such as the full-screen gps navigation radio and bluetooth hands-free communications are available, along with a rear-seat dvd system for quad cabs. We found the navigation radio to be a nice design and relatively easy to operate; these systems are getting better all the time and the latest chrysler group's systems work quite well. overall, the center dash is a paradigm of convenience. Large heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (hvac) buttons can be operated while wearing gloves. A textured fabric is used for trim around the audio and hvac controls that gives the center dash a nice look and feel.

It's the same chassis as the nissan frontier pickup. all xterras use a 4. 0-liter v6 that is powerful and well proven. In 4wd with the optional smooth five-speed automatic transmission it achieves 15 city and 20 highway miles per gallon, a bit more with 2wd or the standard six-speed manual transmission. an off-road model is available that will go pretty much anywhere. It comes with hill descent control, heavy duty trail tires, and skid plates. The xterra x 4wd 24,360) model features a 4wd electronically controlled transfer case with three functions available: 2wd, 4wd high and 4wd low. The xterra x comes with steel wheels. the xterra s 23,810) and 4wd 26,060) upgrades to alloy wheels and bfg long trail tires. The s comes with the manual transmission or the automatic 24,860). the xterra se 27,340) comes with leather upholstery, automatic transmission and 17-inch alloy wheels with bfg long trail tires. The exterior trim has body-colored side moldings and satin chrome trim, as opposed to mere sandblast aluminum on the x and s models. the xterra off-road 4wd 28,340) has roof-mounted lights, black molding, rugged fabric upholstery, a front passenger seat that folds flat, auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass, and leather-wrapped steering wheel. It features hill descent control and hill start assist, an electronic locking rear differential, bilstein gas shocks, and skid plates for the oil pan, fuel tank and transfer case. It rides on bfg rugged trail t/a tires mounted to 6-spoke 16-inch alloy wheels. safety equipment on all 2009 xterra models includes dual-stage front airbags, side-impact airbags in front and roof-mounted airbag curtains, and the latch system (lower anchors and tethers for children). Vehicle dynamic control and vented disc brakes with abs and ebd come standard, along with the government-mandated tire pressure monitor. two option packages are available: the technology package with a premium eight-speaker 6cd system, xm radio, and bluetooth; and the gear package, with roof rack crossbars, fog lights, first aid kit, cargo net and gear basket. walkaroundone of the two new '09 xterra colors is called red brick, a fitting name because if there's any suv on the market that looks like a brick, it's the xterra. But that's part of its popularity, if not charm. for 2009, there's a restyled front fascia and grille, as well as the roof-mounted 50,000 candlepower lights on the off-road model. Tidy, no-nonsense headlamps. The lower corners of the front fascia are rugged and massive, although not conspicuously so because they're flat black, along with the molding on the doors, which is kind of ugly especially since there are exposed bolts underneath, apparently where optional running boards attach. boxy fender flares hang over new wheels, the design of the standard 16s being decidedly common. Maybe it's just as well, because snazzy wheels might not go with the mud flaps. They call it an airdam, the compartment in front that's meant to hold wetsuits and ski boots and muddy mountain-biking clothes; it's covered by a lid held down with a sloppy plastic latch. the back half of the xterra is the part that people mostly notice. The brick has big windows. That's where the first aid kit goes. That kind of thing is what the xterra has been all about, successfully, ever since it was introduced. And other things, such as the side steps that make it easy to climb up on the bumper and reach the roof rack. interior2009 brings some small changes to the interior of the xterra. The reclined seats might better fit six-footers. the center console is deep, with coin holders and two cupholders and the emergency brake handle. Nice tray forward of the shift lever, glovebox of decent size, steering-wheel controls on most models. Good visibility out the rear liftgate window and big side rear windows. the rear seat, split 60/40, folds flat with a few steps. Some suv seats fold easier, some with more difficulty. Good grab handles over the rear doors, one map pocket on the driver's seatback, two 20-ounce bottle holders. Legroom in the rear seat is a bit lacking, at a mere 34. 4 inches, although a person can fit their knees in there, even behind the driver with his or her seat slid back. the cargo area is where the xterra comes into its own. There's a nice deep hidden compartment under the floor, and no less than 10 utility hooks on the floor, sides and ceiling. Space and nets to carry jugs. We were intrigued by the adjustable track system in the cargo floor, similar in design to the utili-track system offered on the nissan titan and frontier pickups; it's optional. driving impressionthe nissan xterra is built on a truck chassis. Its body is attached to a boxed-in steel ladder frame and uses a rugged suspension, double-wishbone front and solid axle with leaf springs in rear. Also new for 2003 are dual-level airbags, which inflate with less force in less forceful collisions. Sensors in the front passenger seat and seat belts also measure the weight and size of the front-seat passenger and, if that passenger is child-size, shut the airbag down completely. . driving impressionride quality in the chevy suburban 1500 is smooth, greatly improved over the previous-generation. The now-standard premium smooth ride suspension features a hydraulically controlled rear self-leveling system to keep the suburban at normal ride height, even when carrying heavy loads. Whether towing a horse trailer or picking up a soccer team, autoride continually adjusts the suspension for optimum ride and handling. The steering is responsive and doesn't isolate the driver from the road. The suburban grips the road surprisingly well for such a large vehicle. Driving quickly over wet pavement on mountain roads, we never lost traction. We drove into wet turns as quickly as we'd ever want to go in a suburban and never lost grip. Stabilitrak measures where the driver is steering against where the truck is actually heading and, when necessary, reduces engine torque or selectively applies one or more wheel brakes to correct the suburban's path. They are rated to tow up to 12,000 pounds, which tops even the ford excursion by half a ton. Suburban 2500 rides a bit harsher than the 1500 because its rear suspension uses leaf springs instead of the 1500's coil springs. But the 2500 rides surp.
