Based on a platform similar to the suburban and silverado models, the tahoe makes a stable rig for pulling trailers. with its rigid chassis, the tahoe feels taut for its size, steering is precise and responsive, and the brakes are capable and smooth. The ride quality is generally smooth, even with the available 20-inch wheels. The major difference between the two engines is that one has a cast-iron block and the other an aluminum block; each delivers 320 horsepower, is matched with a 6-speed automatic transmission, and provides all the power and performance most customers will need. The engines are also e85-compatible, which means they will run on 85-percent ethanol fuel. Epa fuel economy ratings (on gasoline) are 15/21 mpg city/highway. the tahoe hybrid has a 6. 0-liter v8 of 332 horsepower and a two-mode hybrid system, and works seamlessly. The hybrid model provides an answer for those who spend the week in city traffic but want to tow up to 6,200 pounds and bring the family on the weekend. To offset the added weight of the hybrid system (the hybrid tahoe weighs about 250 pounds more than a standard tahoe) and reduce drag, the front end features an aluminum hood and front bumper beam, a lowered air dam, and a slightly larger grille opening to offset the blocked off fog light and tow hook openings and smaller lower air inlets. Along the sides, the running boards are tapered front and rear for improved aerodynamics and the wheel flares are slightly reshaped. At the back, the rear side pillars, roof spoiler and center high-mounted stoplight have a unique shape, the tailgate is made of aluminum and has fixed glass, and led tail lights. It can safely transport up to nine passengers. Launched during the great depression in 1936, the suburban was last completely redesigned for the 2007 model year. the suburban can hold 137 cubic feet of cargo, or up to nine passengers and 45 cubic feet of cargo, or myriad combinations in between. Two weight classes are offered, the normal 1500 and the heavy-duty 2500. The 1500 and 2500 are available in ls and lt trim levels, and the 1500 is also available in a more luxury-oriented ltz trim level. suburban 1500 models come with a 5. 3-liter v8 engine of 320 horsepower, 335 pound-feet of torque and a 6-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy for a suburban 1500 is an epa-estimated 15/21 mpg city/highway. suburban 2500 models get a 6. 0-liter v8 with aluminum block and heads and variable valve timing rated at 352 horsepower and 382 pound-feet of torque. It also comes with a 6-speed automatic. Suburban 2500 4wd is rated at a woeful 10/15 mpg. Sadly, a diesel engine is not available. the suburban 2500 uses a different transmission, steering gear, brake parts, suspension, alternator, wheels, tires, axles and fuel tank than the 1500 series. The primary reason for selecting the 2500 over the 1500 is for its greater towing capacity. A suburban 2500 4wd is rated to tow up to 9,400 pounds, or 9,600 pounds with 2wd. A suburban 1500 4wd is rated to tow up to 8,000 pounds. all engines are e85-compatible, which means they will run on 85-percent ethanol fuel, and all have active fuel management (afm) which switches off half the cylinders when the additional power or idle smoothness isn't needed. Fuel economy with e85 is a dismal 11/16 mpg for the suburban 1500, however. Safety-related options include rear park assist, and side blind zone alert. walkaroundsuburban's profile is elegant in its simplicity, no lines drawing the eye up or down, just a smooth clean surface from one end to the other like an aircraft. Big boxes are best carried in big boxes, not sloping hatchbacks. the suburban has a square-jawed face that's smooth and rugged at the same time, a twin to the shorter tahoe. The mesh grille (bright on 1500, black on 2500) is split by a gold chevy bowtie, and the daytime running lights use separate lamps and can be switched off for after-dark campground arrivals. The bumper fascia reveals a low license-plate holder sandwiched by openings for tow hooks, with small round fog lamps at the corners like single teardrops falling from the headlamp eyes. The seam between the fascia and fenders is very tight, and a good indication of gm's solid body quality on the current generation of trucks. the hood has two long bulges at its sides, reaching almost from windshield to grille; chevy calls these twin bulges the power dome; we call them a good way to keep such a large expanse of otherwise-flat steel from fluttering, just as long-cab pickups have grooves on the roof. For aesthetics we would prefer if the roof-mounted antenna were centered but then long, flat cargo on the roof might present a problem. the rear liftgate is vertical, and the rear window opens independently, with both the manual and power liftgate, which is aluminum, reducing the weight and thus the effort to raise and lower it. Rear wiper coverage is average at best. Some are nearly void of chrome while the z71 adds machismo with sizable fender flares and side steps so short drivers can get in and tall ones can mess up their pant legs. the standard wheels are five-spoke, 17-inch aluminum. Polished wheels are available. Also available are 20-inch wheels that look good, but we think they are too big for grown-ups. Taller tire sidewalls yield a better ride and in most consumer-magazine testing those large-diameter wheels don't go, stop or handle any better, they just ride harder so we prefer the 17-inch wheels. With all the seats in place and set for passengers, 45. 8 cubic feet of cargo space is available, with 90 behind the second row with the third row removed. But there is a nice compartment over the left wheel well, for tools, flashlights, snow chains or the like. smart storage space abounds. The huge console has deep storage and a tray on top. There are two cup holders in a removable tray forward of the console, and one in each wide door pocket. America's heavy-duty family hauler. introductionas familiar as the family dog, the chevrolet suburban cruises into 2005 with the same maximum-size virtues that have kept it a best-seller for so many years. Since the 'burb first appeared, it has never wavered from its mission. It remains the first choice for anyone who needs to haul six or more people plus their cargo. Its v8 engines deliver strong torque for towing heavy loads, and it's supremely stable when pulling heavy trailers through nasty, windy weather. Suburban provides a stable, comfortable ride for long-distance travel. Last but not least, it's fully capable of slogging down muddy two-tracks, whether in pursuit of the great outdoors or to get some work done. the 2005 model year brings some minor improvements. Fuel economy is improved. A revised tire-pressure monitor is now standard, alerting drivers when a tire needs air. New options include stand-alone traction control and 17-inch all-weather tires. The z71 off-road package is available for 2wd models. A touch-screen navigation radio is available. The onstar telematics system is upgraded with enhanced hands-free operation. Interior trim has been revised. Running boards are more aerodynamic. There's also a new 7-to-4-pin wiring adapter for the trailer package. completely redesigned for model year 2000, the suburban then received a substantial update for 2003, with more than 40 major changes designed to enhance safety and improve reliability. Z71 is now offered on 2wd and 4wd 1500s, but not on 2500s. entertainment options include a panasonic dvd player 1,485 on ls, $1,295 on lt) with wireless headphones, auxiliary audio/video jacks and remote game plug-in. The touch-screen navigation system is optional as is an electric tilt-and-slide sunroof. walkaroundthere's no mistaking the 'burb. The chevrolet suburban looks like an old friend. It hasn't been completely redesigned since 2000, and the 2005 model retains a family resemblance to suburbans far older than that. Most people probably won't even notice that the running boards, or assist steps, have been redesigned for better aerodynamics and, says chevrolet, better durability. but we will miss the side-by-side cargo doors that are no longer available at the rear. Gm says they didn't sell very well, but we found them useful when pulling trailers because they would usually clear the trailer tongue jack. They also made it easier to control a dog while opening them. Nonetheless, for 2005, all suburbans come with the one-piece rear hatch with separately opening glass that most families prefer. The hatch is lightweight and can be opened with one hand. It comes with a window wiper/washer, and the one-piece window affords the driver a good view rearward. a puddle lamp mounted below the lt's side mirrors shines down to light up the perimeter. It can be turned on using the keyless remote. That's a nice feature when approaching the suburban in a dark parking garage, as it illuminates underneath the vehicle. In most respects, it is identical to the more luxurious gmc yukon xl. interiorclimbing into a suburban is a challenge for some. Running boards make it easier for others. The suburban's step-in height is lower than it was with pre-2000 models, a benefit of the current model's fully boxed frame. once inside, the suburban is roomy and friendly. The lt's leather seats seem more supportive, but we think there's room for improvement here. Big and cushy, they are similar to the seats found in all of gm's full-size pickups and suvs. Dual-level airbags inflate with less force in less forceful collisions. Sensors in the front passenger seat and seat belts measure the size and weight of the front-seat passenger and disable the airbag for child-size passengers. the second row is quite comfortable and very roomy. Headphone jacks allow rear-seat passengers to listen to cds while those up front tune in the radio. The third-row seatback folds down without having to remove the headrests, then the whole thing flips forward to substantially increase cargo capacity. A short prop rod locks it into place. The one-piece seat can be removed and is mounted on wheels, but it weighs 75 pounds, so removing it is a lot easier with a second person to help. We've done it.) loading cargo is easy because there's plenty of space for it. The spare tire lives underneath the vehicle, freeing up rear cargo space. driving impressionride quality in the 2005 chevy suburban 1500 is smooth, greatly improved over the previous-generation (pre-2000) models. The standard premium smooth ride suspension features a hydraulically controlled rear self-leveling system to keep the suburban at a normal ride height even when carrying heavy loads. Whether towing a horse trailer or picking up the soccer team, autoride continually adjusts the suspension for optimum ride and handling. This technology also helps reduce dive when braking (so that the nose of the vehicle doesn't dip down unduly), and body roll (or lean) during cornering, both of which improve stability. handling is excellent for a big, heavy truck. The steering is responsive and doesn't isolate the driver from the road. The suburban grips the road surprisingly well for such a large vehicle. We never lost traction while pushing hard over wet mountain roads on a rainy day in colorado. They are rated to tow up to 12,000 pounds, which tops even the ford excursion by half a ton. Suburban 2500 rides a bit harsher than the 1500 because its rear suspension uses leaf springs instead of the 1500's coil springs. But the 2500 rides surp.
