Based on a platform similar to the suburban and silverado models, the tahoe makes a stable rig for pulling trailers. with its rigid chassis, the tahoe feels taut for its size, steering is precise and responsive, and the brakes are capable and smooth. The ride quality is generally smooth, even with the available 20-inch wheels. The major difference between the two engines is that one has a cast-iron block and the other an aluminum block; each delivers 320 horsepower, is matched with a 6-speed automatic transmission, and provides all the power and performance most customers will need. The engines are also e85-compatible, which means they will run on 85-percent ethanol fuel. Epa fuel economy ratings (on gasoline) are 15/21 mpg city/highway. the tahoe hybrid has a 6. 0-liter v8 of 332 horsepower and a two-mode hybrid system, and works seamlessly. The hybrid model provides an answer for those who spend the week in city traffic but want to tow up to 6,200 pounds and bring the family on the weekend. Automotive engineers judge wind-cheating aerodynamics by a factor known as the coefficient of drag: the lower the number, the easier air flows over it. The tahoe has a cd of 0. 36. The hybrid is even more slippery, with a cd of 0. 34. However, total drag also includes frontal area, and the tahoe's substantial frontal profile means it isn't as low-drag as a smaller vehicle with a higher cd. up front, the tahoe features a clean interpretation of chevrolet's two-tier front grille with a central bowtie logo. Built on a wide frame, this is a commanding vehicle with a strong stance. A bulging hood enhances its visual strength. Further boosting the muscular look are standard 17-inch wheels, with 18s and 20s available. the tahoe ltz can be distinguished by its standard chrome accents on the door handles and grille inserts. the hybrid model has several distinct characteristics. To offset the added weight of the hybrid system (the hybrid tahoe weighs about 250 pounds more than a standard tahoe) and reduce drag, the front end features an aluminum hood and front bumper beam, a lowered air dam, and a slightly larger grille opening to offset the blocked off fog light and tow hook openings and smaller lower air inlets. Along the sides, the running boards are tapered front and rear for improved aerodynamics and the wheel flares are slightly reshaped. At the back, the rear side pillars, roof spoiler and center high-mounted stoplight have a unique shape, the tailgate is made of aluminum and has fixed glass, and led tail lights. The wheels are more aero efficient and the tires have lower rolling resistance. The spare tire and jack have been replaced by a tire inflation kit. Thankfully, the substantial hybrid wallpaper that ran along the doors of earlier models was stripped off in 2011. interiorthe chevy tahoe instrument panel and center stack are cleanly designed and easy to use. The gauge cluster is attractive and informative, dominated by the large, easy-to-read tachometer and speedometer in black with blue-green numbers; the tachometer scale ends where redline would otherwise be marked. Oil pressure, voltage and water temperature gauges are standard, providing data many other vehicles leave to warning lights. while largely plastic, the cabin materials are finished well and fit together with tight tolerances. With the available leather upholstery, the look is upscale; we find the lighter colors look more luxurious, the black very businesslike. It can safely transport up to nine passengers. Launched during the great depression in 1936, the suburban was last completely redesigned for the 2007 model year. the suburban can hold 137 cubic feet of cargo, or up to nine passengers and 45 cubic feet of cargo, or myriad combinations in between. Two weight classes are offered, the normal 1500 and the heavy-duty 2500. The 1500 and 2500 are available in ls and lt trim levels, and the 1500 is also available in a more luxury-oriented ltz trim level. suburban 1500 models come with a 5. 3-liter v8 engine of 320 horsepower, 335 pound-feet of torque and a 6-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy for a suburban 1500 is an epa-estimated 15/21 mpg city/highway. suburban 2500 models get a 6. 0-liter v8 with aluminum block and heads and variable valve timing rated at 352 horsepower and 382 pound-feet of torque. It also comes with a 6-speed automatic. Suburban 2500 4wd is rated at a woeful 10/15 mpg. Sadly, a diesel engine is not available. the suburban 2500 uses a different transmission, steering gear, brake parts, suspension, alternator, wheels, tires, axles and fuel tank than the 1500 series. The primary reason for selecting the 2500 over the 1500 is for its greater towing capacity. A suburban 2500 4wd is rated to tow up to 9,400 pounds, or 9,600 pounds with 2wd. A suburban 1500 4wd is rated to tow up to 8,000 pounds. all engines are e85-compatible, which means they will run on 85-percent ethanol fuel, and all have active fuel management (afm) which switches off half the cylinders when the additional power or idle smoothness isn't needed. Fuel economy with e85 is a dismal 11/16 mpg for the suburban 1500, however. The epa hasn't published e85 fuel economy for the suburban 2500, perhaps because it involves single-digit numbers. changes for 2012 are relatively minor. Safety-related options include rear park assist, and side blind zone alert. walkaroundsuburban's profile is elegant in its simplicity, no lines drawing the eye up or down, just a smooth clean surface from one end to the other like an aircraft. Big boxes are best carried in big boxes, not sloping hatchbacks. the suburban has a square-jawed face that's smooth and rugged at the same time, a twin to the shorter tahoe. The mesh grille (bright on 1500, black on 2500) is split by a gold chevy bowtie, and the daytime running lights use separate lamps and can be switched off for after-dark campground arrivals. The bumper fascia reveals a low license-plate holder sandwiched by openings for tow hooks, with small round fog lamps at the corners like single teardrops falling from the headlamp eyes. The seam between the fascia and fenders is very tight, and a good indication of gm's solid body quality on the current generation of trucks. the hood has two long bulges at its sides, reaching almost from windshield to grille; chevy calls these twin bulges the power dome; we call them a good way to keep such a large expanse of otherwise-flat steel from fluttering, just as long-cab pickups have grooves on the roof. For aesthetics we would prefer if the roof-mounted antenna were centered but then long, flat cargo on the roof might present a problem. the rear liftgate is vertical, and the rear window opens independently, with both the manual and power liftgate, which is aluminum, reducing the weight and thus the effort to raise and lower it. Rear wiper coverage is average at best. Some are nearly void of chrome while the z71 adds machismo with sizable fender flares and side steps so short drivers can get in and tall ones can mess up their pant legs. the standard wheels are five-spoke, 17-inch aluminum. Polished wheels are available. Also available are 20-inch wheels that look good, but we think they are too big for grown-ups. Taller tire sidewalls yield a better ride and in most consumer-magazine testing those large-diameter wheels don't go, stop or handle any better, they just ride harder so we prefer the 17-inch wheels. With all the seats in place and set for passengers, 45. 8 cubic feet of cargo space is available, with 90 behind the second row with the third row removed. But there is a nice compartment over the left wheel well, for tools, flashlights, snow chains or the like. smart storage space abounds. The huge console has deep storage and a tray on top. There are two cup holders in a removable tray forward of the console, and one in each wide door pocket. All-new for 2014, the completely redesigned sportscar infuses a healthy dose of european flair into classic american muscle. Chevrolet is so proud of its creation they've dubbed it the stingray, a name executives say is historically reserved for the most significant corvette models. Coupes get a standard carbon-fiber roof, while convertibles get a full-power retractable top. An optional dual-mode exhaust ekes out an extra five horses and five pound-feet of torque. Although the power gain over the outgoing model is moderate, the c7's additional 36 pound-feet of torque helps to keep ample low-end thrust on tap. best numbers are achieved with the optional z51 performance package, which adds high-performance gear ratios, an electronic limited-slip differential, unique suspension tuning and more, which work in symphony to skyrocket the corvette stingray from 0–60 mph in just 3. 8 seconds. Plenty of weight was shaved off, too, thanks to an aluminum frame that's 99 pounds lighter than the steel frame used on the previous model, as well as a carbon fiber hood and other new lightweight materials. The result is an epa-estimated 17/29 mpg city/highway with the 7-speed manual. five drive modes from eco to track change the balance between economy and performance by tweaking twelve elements, including steering, suspension and throttle mapping. Like all of gm's performance cars, the stingray was tested extensively on the track during the development. The result is a 50/50 weight balance and improvements in handling. entry-level corvettes in the past have been notoriously skimpy on luxury, especially in the cabin. This time around, the interior has been significantly improved with better finish and materials including aluminum trim (carbon fiber is optional), and standard dual, high-resolution information screens that are reconfigurable. Coupe fans looking for high performance in a more practical package might consider the 580-hp chevrolet camaro zl1 (with the same engine as the c6 corvette zr1), dodge challenger srt8 or ford shelby gt500. None of these, however, can hold a candle to the corvette's eye-catching design. Those seeking performance with european refinement and luxury could consider the porsche cayman, bmw z4 or bmw m3, but these are underpowered and overpriced in comparison, making the 2014 chevrolet corvette stingray the best performance value for the money. lineupthe 2014 chevrolet corvette stingray is currently available in both coupe and convertible body styles. Standalone options include competition sports seats 2,495), a dual-mode exhaust system 1,195) which increases horsepower to 460 and torque to 465 lb.-ft., carbon fiber interior trim 995) microfiber-wrapped upper interior trim 995), red-painted calipers 595) and black-painted wheels 495). safety features on all models include dual-stage front airbags, side airbags, abs, traction control, electronic stability control, a rearview camera and onstar telematics with a six-month subscription. walkaroundin shadowy silhouette, the shape of the c7 still looks very much like a corvette. Throw the lights on, however, and it's clear the 2014 stingray is a new breed of beast. While the footprint doesn't differ much from the outgoing c6, the stingray is slightly longer, lower and narrower. designers say they used both the stingray (of the aquatic variety) and fighter jets as inspiration. European styling cues appear borrowed from ferraris and other uber-expensive performance cars. In fact, from the cabin, a glance of the sharp side crease in the side-view mirrors could make one think for a moment that he or she is riding in a lamborghini. Lines overall are more aggressive an angular, replacing the softer curves of the previous model. up front, a more prominent grille is trimmed with mesh and chromework. Headlamps are longer, reshaped and farther swept back, with a row of l-shaped led daytime running lamps. Narrow side reflectors now arc alongside the front fender. the hood is more extensively creased, not only to give the stingray a more powerful look, but to be more aerodynamic. A power bulge houses a functional vent. the carbon fiber hood on coupes is lighter, helping the c7 achieve a lower center of gravity. Its light weight also makes it easier to remove. A translucent plastic roof is available as an option, but we found it uncomfortable to be constantly accosted by the glaring midday sun, so we don't recommend this option. Convertibles get a power-operated top. side lines are more sharply creased, with the stingray badge sitting just behind the front side vents. Sideview mirrors are more rectangular than before. Standard wheels are 18-inch aluminums in front and 19s in the rear; or 19s and 20s, respectively, with the z51 performance package. although the 2014 chevrolet corvette in many ways evokes images of european sportscars, the stingray hasn't completely abandoned its american heritage. This is most noticeable in the rear, with the squarish, camaro-esque taillights. Bold, center quad exhaust pipes are shiny trumpet-like bells, making the corvette look as if it had swallowed, then attempted to expel, a mariachi band. interiorthe cabin was historically the corvette's biggest weakness. While previous generations had an interior that was functional, materials, switches and displays had a decidedly parts-bin look. Not so with the stingray. Chevrolet knows the new corvette couldn't succeed based on exterior looks and powertrain alone, and interior designers did a fine job raising the bar with soft-touch materials, higher-end controls and better seats. However, the corvette still uses extensive bonding material throughout the car, and that fresh-glue smell typical of past corvettes is still undeniably present when one opens the door. immediately it's clear the cabin of the 2014 corvette stingray is driver-oriented. Since the 'burb first appeared, it has never wavered from its mission. It remains the first choice for anyone who needs to haul six or more people plus their cargo. Its v8 engines deliver strong torque for towing heavy loads, and it's supremely stable when pulling heavy trailers through nasty, windy weather. Suburban provides a stable, comfortable ride for long-distance travel. Last but not least, it's fully capable of slogging down muddy two-tracks, whether in pursuit of the great outdoors or to get some work done. the 2005 model year brings some minor improvements. Fuel economy is improved. A revised tire-pressure monitor is now standard, alerting drivers when a tire needs air. New options include stand-alone traction control and 17-inch all-weather tires. The z71 off-road package is available for 2wd models. A touch-screen navigation radio is available. The onstar telematics system is upgraded with enhanced hands-free operation. Interior trim has been revised. Running boards are more aerodynamic. There's also a new 7-to-4-pin wiring adapter for the trailer package. completely redesigned for model year 2000, the suburban then received a substantial update for 2003, with more than 40 major changes designed to enhance safety and improve reliability. Silverado was last redesigned for 2007. the base engine is a 4. 3-liter v6 (195 hp/260 lb-ft of torque) with a 4-speed automatic, offered only on regular cabs and 2wd extended cab models with the standard bed.
